What
should you wear and not wear for TV interviews? Here is a list so you
can look terrific for your TV interview:
- Blue is
the all around best color for TV.
- Pastel
shirts and blouses work well on TV.
- Don't
wear white, black or red. White glows on the TV screen. Black is
harsh and can use up all the light. Reds "bleed" and are
distracting.
- Don't
wear dangling earrings, or jewelery that jingles and could distract
and bang into your microphone.
- Limit
rings to one per hand, and all sparkly jewelry is out.
- Wear
wrinkle-free clothing and don't hit your chest even for emphasis
because it make a loud thud into your attached microphone.
- Stripes,
herringbone, checks, and small busy designs are out.
- Keep
your dress simple and rather dull to be safe.
- The
idea is to get TV viewers to focus on your face and what you have to
say, not your clothing and accessories.
- Men
should have an inch of your shirt cuff showing.
- Wear
colored pants.
- Avoid
wearing a dark shirt, dark suit, and dark tie together.
- Men
should wear high socks so the skin doesn't show if you cross your
legs.
- Vests
come across as stuffy on TV.
- Women
should avoid wearing short skirts if you want the viewers to stay
focused on your message.
- Avoid
shiny hair products.
- Dispense
with logos, company names or brands, except for your own company
logo.
Relax and speak about your book or your expertise – that should be easy for you. They aren't going to ask you anything else except what you are booked to speak about.
When it comes to TV make up, it is best left up to the professional or the very proficient in that area. There is a ton of information online with many conflicting tips and guidelines to follow. This is something you may not want to experiment with on TV – it’s too late once you’re live.
