Biz Tip of The Day: Go From Writing Your Book to Thriving as an Author

Biz Tip of The Day: Go from writing your book to thriving as an author, first let me explain the difference between a writer, and an author. A writer is someone who writes, whether it is articles, a blog, or a manuscript. An author is a writer who has had their manuscript published. An author has a book that can be bought from a bookseller or from themselves. An author is able to hold their published book in their hands, and has the satisfaction of knowing that their work has been published. An author is considered an authority on their topic. By the way, do you know that the first six letters in authority, spells author?

The following is an account of what it felt like for an author friend of mine to see her name on the cover of her book for the first time on a Barnes and Noble shelf.

"The feeling I experienced was the second greatest joy in my life – the first was becoming a Mother. Suddenly my book title and my name seemed to jump off the shelf when I first saw it. I leaped up and down with joy, when a man rounded the corner. He chuckled, as I tried to walk away, but he said I would have to explain that.

I explained it was all about seeing my very first book for sale. He started jumping up and down with me, and around the corner came his wife. She just shook her head, and said she didn't even want to know what that was all about. He grabbed her by her arm and told her what was going on. They wound up buying the book, and I signed it for them. What a great experience that was for me."

I asked my friend, if it’s such a joy, what in the world keeps a writer from taking that first step to becoming an author? She told me the biggest obstacle many writers face is fear. Some are afraid of failure, some are afraid of success, but most are afraid that they won’t be able to write a book properly. Most are familiar with the fear of failure, but the fear of success often goes unrecognized. When you succeed, your life changes, and that can be scary to deal with. As a coach, she often works with clients who have become so comfortable in their daily routine, that the slightest change unnerves them. Once they learn how to overcome that false premise it is amazing to watch them grow personally, and professionally.
