Biz Tip of The Day: Eat Meals With Your Employees

Biz Tip of The Day: Eat Meals With Your Employees

Biz Tip of The Day: Eat meals with your employees, instead of in separate management quarters. Build a good rapport with your employees. Keep the lines of communication open. It is amazing how much you can learn about your own business from each of those who are doing the work. Enacted suggestions from employees often enhances your operation, or revenues. Such employee suggestions should be recognized, and rewarded.

Eliminate your own preferential parking spaces. Some Japanese companies have preferential parking for one person. Most Americans never guess who that might be. It is close to the entrance parking for the on premises doctor, or nurse, for obvious reasons. In other words, there is no glaring preferential treatment of management over labor.

Biz Tip of The Day: 'Kissing Up' by Employees?

Biz Tip of The Day: 'Kissing up' by Employees? Make sure if any 'kissing up' is being done by your employees, that they are 'kissing up' to the customers instead of to the management. Set the atmosphere so that employees understand that they are recognized for their good work, but that 'brown nosing' is not a requirement.

Biz Tip of The Day: Get Used to Using the Consumers Guide

Biz Tip of The Day: Get used to using the Consumers Guide, and Consumer Reports (online) before investing in any kind of equipment, even smaller electronics. It will save you a ton of headaches, and money down the road. Check out the positive and negative comments listed online by buyers of a particular item you are considering purchasing.

Since electronics are so short lived these days, rather than throwing them in the dumpster, you might take advantage of programs sponsored by Target and Radio Shack. They don't give you cash, but both give you a store credit voucher on certain electronics.

Biz Tip of The Day: Do You Use a Debit Card to Pay business Bills?

Biz Tip of The Day: Do you use a debit card to pay business bills, and to make purchases for your business? If so, it would be wise to have a separate limited amount account set up for that purpose only, so that if someone uses your card you won't lose all of your businesses funds. It happened to a friend of mine, and she was very happy that she followed my advice some time ago about opening a separate limited amount account.

Biz Tip of The Day: Always Make Monthly Credit Card Payment More Than The Minimum

Biz Tip of The Day: Always Make Monthly Credit Card Payment More Than The Minimum

Biz Tip of The Day: Always and always make the monthly credit card payment more than the minimum amount payable. Did you know that when you make a minimum payment, all of the payment probably goes to your lowest fee, or interest rated charge? Each card company has its own policy about minimum payments. You would have to check with your to find out what their particular policy is.

Over minimum payments are governed by the CARD Act. When your payment is more than the minimum payment, the excess over the minimum payment goes toward the highest interest rated charges on your card, such as cash advancements. If your monthly minimum payment required is $50.00, and you pay $150.00, then $100.00 will be applied to the balance of your highest interest rated item (The minimum is usually applied toward your lowest interest item).

The point is, you want more money to go toward the higher rated items on your account to get rid of them as quickly as possible to keep them from mushrooming month to month. Good to know. But, the very best thing you can do is to pay your monthly credit card bill on time, in full, each and every month.

Biz Tip of The Day:Search For a no-fee Credit Card.

Biz Tip of The Day: Search for a no-fee credit card (such deals come and go) than cancel your fee-carrying card. As always, it is advisable to pay off credit card debt on time every month because of their astronomical interest rates, late fees, and other charges. It is, however, reasonable to say that some of us tend to run up credit card debt when starting up a business. Dave Ramsey suggests to use his snowball debt approach. He starts you off by paying off the card with the smallest balance, then work your way up, finally tackling the one with the biggest amount due.

Biz TIp of The Day: Small Business Owners Might Consider Using a Personal Banking Account

Biz Tip of The Day: Small business owners might consider using a personal banking account rather than a business account with your bank, or credit union. The reason for this is that banks are responsible for banking fraud, or theft of account funds, wire transfers, or illegal cashing of checks from personal accounts, but not for business accounts. Go figure. An answer would be to run your business expenses through a personal dedicated checking account. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Check with your bank to see how to handle such an account.

Also, take the time to check out local credit unions. Oftentimes their benefits are cheaper, and greater than those of banks.

Biz Tip of The Day: Warnings Have Been Issued From the FBI

Biz Tip of The Day: Warnings have been issued from the FBI, and other governmental agencies about the threat of theft of banking, and other valuable business information online. Oddly, small businesses are more targeted by computer hackers, since they know bigger ones most likely have an IT department with tighter securities online.

As a result, it is recommended that you have a dedicated computer to use for banking, stock trading, or any other monetary transactions. Just in case someone cracks your codes, at least the rest of your business data would go unscathed. To further protect this dedicated computer, it should be forbidden to use it for e-mail, or web surfing.

Make sure that two trusted people know all of the codes, and passwords, in case one person is not available, or resigns without leaving the codes behind. There have been cases of disgruntled employees quitting, but keep on posting damaging information on the business website. Such ex-employees have been known to totally delete the business data. From the beginning you must safeguard yourself and your business from any of these kinds of set backs, or ruination.

Biz Tip of The Day: In Tough Economic Times Can Be a Great Time to Start a Business

Biz Tip of The Day: In tough economic times can be a great time to start a business, and especially a home-based business, since American homes are 50% larger than 10 years ago, with fewer people living in them. After all, your business would be rent-free office space, and contain merchandise space. It's empty space just otherwise being wasted.

Think about it. Start researching, and pursuing something that you are passionate about. Turn your passion into profit.

Biz Tip of The Day: Background Screening Should be Routine

Biz Tip of The Day: Background screening should be routine. It has become increasingly important to do background screening for each applicant you seriously plan to hire. If your business hasn't grown large enough for its own Human Resources Department, you may have to personally handle interviewing, background screenings, and hiring. It is still easy enough to locate a reputable company to do the background screenings for a nominal fee. This will pay off for you in the long run by helping to eliminate a lot of the guess work, not to mention any con-artists, troublemakers, or criminals. Oftentimes, these types are difficult to recognize. It's best not to rely on our own instincts, and hunches when it come to something as important as entrusting individuals with segments of, or all of your business operations.

Just as they expect timely, paid-in-full checks from you, you, in turn, expect them to deliver what they are being paid to do. Avoid hiring friends, relatives, or their friends in lieu of the best qualified person for each job.

Biz Tip of The Day: Do You Know What is More Acceptable Then Smoking?

Biz Tip of The Day: Do you know what is more acceptable than smoking? Having a drink, these days, is a lot more acceptable than smoking in the presence of others. Smoking has become a social turn-off. Smoke odors from clothing, hair, the air, and the breath can be offensive to non-smokers. If you are a smoker, remember to bring out the trusty breath mints, or spray before your meetings. Some of these tips may seem like, “Well, dah,” but when overlooked, they can cost you that coveted account, or big sale, without your ever knowing the reasons why.

Biz Tip of The Day: Professionalism, and Courtesy Always Pay Off

Biz Tip of The Day: Professionalism, and courtesy always pay off. For the same reasons a food server in a restaurant should not sit down at a customer's table, uninvited, you should not cross the line in acting too familiar with a customer, or a prospective customer. That doesn't mean you can't have an occasional drink or two with a client. We all know that many a good deal was made over a drink, and it's alright when acceptable by all parties involved. It is advisable to limit yourselves to no more than a couple, though, since things could get out of hand. Plus, it should be reserved as an occasional practice, and certainly not as a rule.

Biz Tip of The Day: Good Etiquette Goes a Long Way

Biz Tip of The Day: Good etiquette goes a long way. It is a matter of good manners, courtesy, and common sense. Let's get personal since business contacts happen between people. It has happened to all of us on the phone, so please get used to covering the mouthpiece, turning away, or putting a call on hold when you cough, or sneeze. It is amazing how many don't do these things, on both ends of the telephone, I might add. It's probably not necessary to mention not chewing gum, or food while engaged in conversation on the telephone.

Did you notice that almost everything discussed about telephone etiquette, can also be used in person, face to face, just as effectively? Don't sell it short, either, in your intra-office relationships. Good etiquette goes a very long way, and should be used in every phase of your business.
