Think of yourself as a student in your own profession. When we make conscious attempts to learn more it inevitably leads to prosperity. Having a natural curiosity about things we see and what people think is part of what made Sam Walton and Henry Ford excel. Sam Walton is the founder of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Henry Ford is the founder of Ford Motor Company. Both men understood and practiced natural curiosity by learning from the people who actually did the work for them, as well as from others outside their companies. They were humble enough to learn from others. We each need to strive to be more like these two men and not to be the kind of business person who is an egotistical know-it-all who never gets any place, except within their own mind.

Never hire someone simply because he/she is recommended by someone you like or respect. Recommendations are meant to be a reference; you need to check whether or not the person is qualified to do the work.
 
            The manager in charge of hiring needs to take their time and not rush. It should be a process of elimination up front; fire before hiring. Set up some values such as content of character, talent, drive, energy level, attitude, and accomplishments. Don’t be overwhelmed by experience, rather examine their hurdles and accomplishments.

Making clients wealthier or somehow enriched by what you provide is your primary goal, but not at the expense of your own enrichment. You don’t want to undervalue your worth or that of your product.
            You and your customers should be valuable to each other, otherwise, you will be out of business in short order. For you to hold up your end of the bargain you need to do everything you can to keep your costs down, while doing all you can to increase your bottom line. All of this has to be maintained at the same time you are delivering more than you promised to your customers. Nobody said it was going to be easy. You may need to enlist consultants from time to time. You can bring in consultants on an as-needed-basis which will help keep your overhead expenses down.
            Early on, in your business you may need investment or financial advisers. Be sure to shop for the one which best suits your needs. Simply put, shop for an individual or a firm which does not charge transaction fees. It is best to pay flat fees whenever you can for such services. Why? It is human nature to think of ways to create multiple transactions to generate multiple fees. Paying a flat fee removes this temptation on the part of the financial adviser.

In order to keep from becoming overwhelmed, write down tasks on individual index cards, so you can easily prioritize them into “Action for Today,” and “Action for Tomorrow.”  When tomorrow rolls around, do the same thing again.
            About twenty percent of what you have planned to do is most important on your list. Apply the Pareto principle. We know it as the Eighty/Twenty Rule of Thumb. It was originated by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto in the nineteenth century. He observed how eighty percent of the results came from twenty percent of effort. The principle can be applied to a multitude of things in different ways. One such example is: When a carpet is vacuumed, about eighty percent of the dirt picked up is likely to come from twenty percent of the carpet, namely, the high traffic area.
