Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. In each new decade of our lives we should be able to think about the previous one and surmise, “If I only knew then what I know now.” When we can do this it is proof of our insight, continued maturity and education. Think of yourself as a student in your own profession. When we make conscious attempts to learn more it inevitably leads to prosperity. Having a natural curiosity about things we see and what people think is part of what made Sam Walton and Henry Ford excel. Sam Walton is the founder of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Henry Ford is the founder of Ford Motor Company. Both men understood and practiced natural curiosity by learning from the people who actually did the work for them, as well as from others outside their companies. They were humble enough to learn from others. We each need to strive to be more like these two men and not to be the kind of business person who is an egotistical know-it-all who never gets any place, except within their own mind.

If you can shape your business life or your working life, you can just look at it as another extension – you just fulfill all your values as a human being in the work place. If you are an activist, you bring the activism of your life into your business, or if you love creative art, you can bring that in.

It’s not really work for me because I have no idea what work is anymore. It is so much a part of my life.
